Abstract

Ground water depletion is one of the major concerns in most of the states in India; particularly in Tamil Nadu. Improper harvesting of rain water and allowing the rain water to mix with the sea through drainage systems is one of the major reasons behind this. Our research aims at increasing the ground water table by forcing the stagnant water inside the ground during favourable situation (impermeable top layer and permeable lower layer). Apart from increasing the ground water table, it also eliminates the breeding of mosquitoes which generally breed in stagnant water. The drainer drains water with a volumetric efficiency of 55.6% with draining rate of 4.9 L per minute. The scope of the project is limited to a less permeable top-most layer (0.05–0.5 cm/h) and if the lower layer is relatively more permeable (2–5 cm/h).
