Abstract
The increasing awareness on the harmful effects of synthetic materials, the use of natural and renewable resources such as natural fillers as reinforcement in polymer composites has drawn significant attention in recent years. The current study involves the use one such natural filler obtained from Artabotrys hexapetalus seeds (AHS) for fabricating epoxy-based composites. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis were performed to examine the microstructure, crystalline and chemical structure and intermolecular interaction of the seed particle. The crystalline size and crystalline index were found to be 14.03 nm and 10.8%, respectively. The outcomes of the composite’s characterization showed that the mechanical properties including tensile, flexural, shore D hardness and impact strengths attained their peak values of 27.67 MPa, 44.39 MPa, 75 and 3.37 kJ/m2, respectively when 10 wt% of particles were reinforced to epoxy. In addition, the thermal analysis indicated that the composites are majorly degraded at temperature range of 390 °C. The water absorption results indicate that the composite exhibits hydrophilic behavior and conforms to Fick’s law of diffusion. The findings clearly demonstrate that the reinforcement of 10 wt% of AHS particles improves the overall properties of the composites and could be employed for light weight structural applications including automobile interiors, aircraft cabin interior panels, door frames and window panels.
